Why We Exist

Located in the heart of Gainesville, we exist to share Christ's love with open hearts, open minds and open doors by:

Worshiping God
Connecting with each other and our neighbors
Growing in faith, and
Serving our community and the world.

What We Do

Our mission is to “Connect our Church with our Community and our Community with Christ!” We commit to worshiping God, not only on Sunday mornings but the other six days of the week through actions of kindness, service, and love in our families, community and world.

What We Believe

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.
A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Our belief in these words is the cornerstone on which our faith is built. You can also learn more about the beliefs of the United Methodist Church here.

Our History

Founded in 1857, FUMC was the first Methodist Church in Gainesville and is the “mother” church of many other United Methodist Churches in town. Our very own Epworth Hall was the original site of East Florida Seminary which would later become the University of Florida. Although many changes have occurred over the years including adding and subtracting ministries, building renovations and more, one thing has stayed the same, our love for Christ shown by our commitment to making our community and our world a better place.
